This term Year 7 & 8 have been studying photography in Art and Design Technology. They first learnt about the different parts of the camera and how they work; as the ‘digital native’ generation they were very interested to hear about how film in old print cameras was developed!
We then looked at how to take a good photograph, studying the effects of natural versus artificial light as well as thinking about how a photographer can set a scene through photography. We studied the rule of thirds, and how aligning the subject of a photo with the intersections of the thirds creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition than simply centering the subject.
For their project the children have been inspired by Argentinian artist Martín Feijoó, and his drawings on top of photographs of clouds, to create a mixed media piece,. They have been taking photographs, printing the photographs and then adding detail on top using pen, pencil, paint and pastels. Ideas include portals to other worlds, fairies appearing around school and patterns and faces in the clouds. We’re all looking forward to seeing the finished projects at the end of term.
