What's the Matter?

18th March 2022

After two weeks of going back in time and a week of going Dotty, the year 4s have had an enthusiastic return to science lessons, where they have begun learning about the different states of matter.

But… what is Matter? Matter is anything that occupies space and has weight, so pretty much anything you can think of!

In lessons, children compared and grouped together different materials, classifying them according to their respective states of matter (solids, liquids and gases)

As part of the school’s thematic approach to learning, children also spent time in their art lessons creating bright and colourful posters which perfectly summarised the three states of matter and their properties.

In the coming weeks, the year 4s will be investigating properties of gases, heating and cooling different materials in order to observe materials changing state.

There will be plenty of time for our aspiring scientists to hone their investigative skills, as they conduct practical investigations into the rate of evaporation and its link to temperature as well as creating their own small-scale version of The Water Cycle.
