World Environment Week

6th June 2025

BNIS marked World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, by embracing this year’s theme: #BeatPlasticPollution. Despite a short week, students and staff engaged in daily discussions about environmental issues. A highlight was a talk by local marine biologist Christina Geijer, who spoke about how plastic pollution affects marine life such as dolphins and whales.

Obviously, BNIS could not resist dressing up for the occasion. On Thursday, children and staff were challenged to wear their home clothes and investigate how much plastic was in them, and also to create an item of clothing or an accessory out of waste plastic.

The effort put into this challenge was impressive. From crisp-packet waistcoats and chocolate-wrapper ties, to plastic bottle jet packs and skirts, the school was squeaking and rustling in used plastic. This made us all realise how much plastic we use on a daily basis!

The week marked the official launch of Braeburn Nanyuki’s Plastic Recycling Point. Please bring in your waste plastic from home and place it in the large bin in the carpark to be recycled into other objects (think fence posts) by Mazingira Recyclers.

Over the next year, children will be visiting their factory to see what and how waste plastic can be repurposed. We are also very excited by the prospect of getting new furniture and play equipment made from recycled plastic for the school. Watch this space!
