Year 2: Fun Fractions!

27th February 2021

This week in Maths, we introduced children to finding ¼, ¾ and 1/3 of a shape and a set of objects or quantity.

Children had fun learning how to find fractions of numbers and amounts. They were involved in a range of activities that involved visuals, games and solving some problems in context.

They used paper shapes to find a quarter by first halving the shape then splitting the half into half.

They extended this knowledge to help them find a quarter of an amount by first halving the total then splitting the half into half using counters. Afterwards, they learnt how to combine three of the quarters to find three-quarters of a set of objects.

In addition to that, the children have learnt that one third is one part of three equal parts. They used counters to find a third of some numbers.

Another new concept this week was counting on and back on a fraction number line.
