As part of the English curriculum, students are encouraged to “develop an appreciation and love of reading” and an important part of this is to read independently. Our Year 6 to Year 8 students have been doing just that. While there are novels that we all read and discuss as a class, students are also expected to read and report on their own reading. This helps students to find books that align with their personal interests and abilities. When this happens, an appreciation and love of reading develops.

Every week in English, we take time for students to share what they are reading independently with their classmates, which encourages further reading and discussion.
