There is something truly special about school life at Braeburn Nanyuki, and you only have to look up at the mountain we live beneath to see it. While classroom lessons are our day-to-day, the annual Year 8 expedition up Mount Kenya is where the real magic happens, testing our Year 8's grit and resilience in a way nothing else can. This June, our oldest children swapped their school uniforms for thermal layers, hiking boots, and heavy daypacks to take on the ultimate challenge. The adventure took them up the Sirimon route, starting in the lush forest before climbing into the freezing, sub-zero world of the higher camps like Likii North and Shiptons. Led by Sakwa, Mawee, and the brilliant Basecamp crew, the children were pushed well out of their comfort zones. Mountain weather loves to keep people guessing, but whether they were dealing with thick mud on the practice hikes or enduring the biting cold on the final climb, our children are true 'Nanyukians' and faced it all with massive smiles and an amazing attitude.

What makes this trip such a massive part of the Braeburn Nanyuki experience is the pure determination it brings out in the children. Watching them forge ahead through the exhaustion and the freezing cold showed exactly what they are made of. There were definitely moments of struggle on the trail, but the real triumph was how they worked as a team. The summit morning was a real masterclass in looking out for one another, with the children constantly cheering each other on and digging deep to make sure nobody felt left behind.

A huge part of this success was down to the incredible staff support. A massive thank you to Mr Gatimu and Mrs Tomkins, who accompanied the children on the climb, keeping everyone motivated, safe, and moving forward every step of the way. All that hard work paid off in the most spectacular way. As the morning sun broke over the peaks, every single child made it to Point Lenana. Reaching 4,985 metres is a huge deal for adults, let alone Year 8 pupils! Standing at the top, exhausted but absolutely buzzing, the children realised just how much they can achieve when they refuse to give up. This life-changing adventure is exactly what our school is all about. Huge congratulations to our hikers - you showed true grit and made the entire school incredibly proud!
