Young Archaeologists

16th September 2021

Lower Key Stage 2 Students have started to learn about the Stone Age this term, and if our Year 3 Historians are anything to go by, it certainly seems to have sparked a lot of interest.

This week children tried to get their heads around how long ago the Stone Age really was, creating a timeline across the school grounds to show the three main eras: Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic. Once they figured out the correct order, children then had to figure out where we would put our current year, 2021 CE… it wasn’t long before Year 3 realised that we had to send one of their most energetic classmates all the way to the other side of the school field with the sign!

In Art lessons, children studied the cave paintings of Lascaux in Montignac, France. The network of caves was discovered in 1940 and has helped us modern day humans to expand our knowledge of prehistoric times; they then used this as inspiration for their own artwork using oil pastels and similar colours and images to the ones found in the caves.

The whole class enjoyed pretending they were in a cave by sticking large papers underneath our desks or on our classroom walls, as of course children in the Stone Age would never have had the luxury of a desk and chair to create their cave paintings...

Everyone is so looking forward to a trip next week to Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to visit a real life Hand Axe sight!
