Zooming into Space

10th June 2022

Curiosity about space starts very early. As soon as children are old enough to look up at the night sky, they begin to wonder: what’s up there? Could there be life somewhere, impossibly far away? Can we get there?

FS2 had an ‘out of this world’ start to the last half with their new topic, Space. The children have had wonderful discussions around space and aliens, impressing teachers with their pre-existing knowledge, including such facts as: the sun is a big star; the moon is made out of rocks (though some believe and argue that it’s made out of cheese!) and many more. The children could also name most of the planets in our solar system, although there were cries of outrage on revealing that Pluto is in fact no longer considered one of them. Children in FS2 have also explored both a selection of fiction and non-fiction books, as well as weighing and comparing different sizes of ‘moon rocks’.

Additionally, the nearby playgroup Toddler Town came for a visit to Braeburn Nanyuki’s early years department this week and children from both school has a fantastic time playing together; working together to conduct a magic milk experiment and sharing their questions and predictions with one another.
